Activities and Attractions
Manor Farm is located in the heart of the South Downs and is within easy reach of a whole range of sights and activities.Devils Dyke is the closest attraction to Manor Farm and is less than 5 minutes drive away or a brisk 20 minute walk to the top from the farmhouse. At the top is the Devils Dyke public house run by Brewers Fayre which is also home to devilsdyke.net a community wireless broadband project that has 2 webcams looking out across West Sussex and the South Downs and also a live weather station - perfect for checking the weather before heading out on the hills! Devils Dyke is also one of the UKs most popular sites for hang gliding and paragliding and throughout the year when the weather is suitable there will be lots of brightly coloured hang gliders and paragliders soaring across the South Downs. If you fancy having a go at either hang gliding or paragliding then you can try and contact one of the local schools through the Southern Hang Gliding Club. If you want a more sedate view of the South Downs you could go for a flight from the Southdown Gliding Club at Storrington (14 miles) or one of the many flyings schools at Shoreham Airport (10 miles).
If you prefer to keep you feet firmly on the ground then there is no shortage of activities. Manor Farm is located on the South Downs Way giving footpath and bridleway access to hundreds of acres of beautiful countryside on foot, horse or bicycle. The large number of paths allows you to plan any number of routes both short and long to suit everyone. Off the South Downs there is of course the Sussex coast with miles of sandy and pebble beaches for walking or riding. Local beaches include Brighton (7 miles), Shoreham (10 miles), Worthing (14 miles) and Littlehampton (22 miles). From the beaches there is a whole host of water sports available (recommended only in the Summer!) including windsurfing, kitesurfing, dinghy sailing, yachting and, of course, swimming. If you prefer a less active break there is a whole host of attractions and sights to visit. Poynings itself has a well maintained Norman church and sister churches in the nearby villages of Newtimber and Edburton. There is also a whole host of country pubs - The Royal Oak in Poynings been the closest and the well known Shepherd and Dog in nearby Fulking (2 miles). Brighton (7 miles) also has a large range of restaurants, pubs and bars and is also host to a large range of attractions including the West and now collapsed East Piers, the Royal Pavilion, The Lanes and much, much more. |
